Cleaning the lint trap isn't enough

Why dryer lint trap cleaning is only half the job

Most homeowners treat dryer lint trap cleaning as a single step: remove the screen, peel off the visible layer, replace it. That habit is worth keeping. But the trap slot the screen lives in — and the blower wheel the airstream feeds into — collect lint the whole time, invisibly. Those two areas are where the real restriction builds, and neither one cleans itself.

Pull your lint screen out right now and look at the slot it lives in. Run your finger along the side walls. There's a felt-like gray layer built up in there, narrowing the airflow opening whether or not your screen is spotless. A narrow, flexible dryer lint brush costs about $8 at any hardware store. That slot should get brushed out every three to six months. Most people do it never.

Where lint actually goes after the screen

Airflow in a dryer runs drum → lint screen → blower wheel → exhaust duct. Anything small enough to get past the screen rides the airstream straight into the blower housing. The blower wheel — the fan that pulls air through the machine — has fins designed to move air. Those same fins are perfect for catching fine lint. Over time they cake up, the wheel moves less air, and the dryer runs hotter and slower trying to compensate.

The trap slot compounds the problem. Even with consistent screen cleaning, the slot walls narrow over time. Brushing them out takes five minutes and costs nothing beyond the brush. It's the single most overlooked maintenance step on any dryer.

The blower wheel: what restricted airflow actually looks like

We pulled a Whirlpool dryer for a customer in Milford last year. She'd had her exhaust vent professionally cleaned six months before, so she ruled that out and figured the heating element was failing. We removed the back panel, ran the machine for two minutes, and watched the blower wheel barely turn — it was so packed with lint it had almost no clearance. Heat was building inside the cabinet because air had nowhere to go fast enough.

The lint slot is a genuine DIY job. Here's how to do it:

  • Pull the lint screen completely out of the slot
  • Insert a flexible dryer lint brush into the slot and work it down both sides
  • Pull out whatever the brush brings up — the first pass after a few years will surprise you
  • Repeat every three to six months to keep it manageable

This takes about five minutes and costs nothing beyond the brush. It's something every Connecticut homeowner can do without touching a panel or a wire.

Professional: cleaning the blower wheel

The blower wheel is a different story. Getting to it usually means removing the front or rear panel depending on the brand, disconnecting a few wires, and knowing what you're looking at once you're inside.
