The lint screen catches maybe 70% of what your dryer produces. The rest, the fine particulate stuff that slips through the mesh, keeps moving. It coats the inside of the trap slot, sticks to the duct walls inside the cabinet, and packs itself into the blower wheel. After three to five years of regular use, that somewhere is full. And nobody cleaned it because nobody knew to look there.
Where lint actually goes after the screen
Airflow in a dryer runs drum to lint screen to blower wheel to exhaust duct. The screen is the first filter, not the last. Anything small enough to get past it rides the airstream straight into the blower housing. The blower wheel, which is the fan that actually pulls air through the machine, has fins designed to move air. Those same fins are perfect for catching fine lint. Over time they cake up, the wheel moves less air, and the dryer runs hotter and slower trying to compensate.
The trap slot itself is its own problem. Pull your lint screen out right now and look at the slot it lives in. Run your finger along the side walls. There's a felt-like gray layer built up in there, and it narrows the airflow opening whether or not your screen is spotless. A dryer lint brush, narrow and flexible, costs about $8 at any hardware store. That slot should get brushed out every three to six months. Most people do it never.
The blower wheel looks like a hamster wheel full of felt
I pulled a Whirlpool dryer out for a woman in Milford last year. She'd had her exhaust vent professionally cleaned six months before, so she ruled that out and figured the heating element was going. I pulled the back panel off, ran the machine for two minutes, and watched the blower wheel barely turn. It was so packed with lint it had almost no clearance. The heat was building up inside the cabinet because air had nowhere to go fast enough. I cleared the wheel, brushed out the slot, put the panel back on. She ran a full load of towels in 47 minutes. Parts: nothing. Her dryer had been limping along for almost a year, running two full cycles per load, because of an $8 brush job she didn't know to do.
Whirlpool and Maytag dryers from roughly 2015 to 2022 are the machines I open up most often with this problem. The exhaust path routing on those models pulls lint past the screen faster than some other designs. Samsung gas dryers from the same era show it too, sometimes faster. If I do ten dryer calls in a week, two or three of them trace back to internal lint restriction, not a failed component.
The thermal fuse that keeps blowing
On Whirlpool machines, the thermal fuse is part number 3392519. It costs about $6. It's a one-time safety device that cuts power to the heating circuit when the dryer gets too hot. When airflow is restricted by a packed blower wheel, temperatures inside the cabinet climb, and the fuse blows to protect the machine. That's the fuse doing exactly what it's supposed to do.
But here's the pattern I see constantly. Customer replaces the fuse, dryer works, fuse blows again four to six months later. They replace it again. Now they think the dryer is dying. It's not. The fuse is a symptom. The restricted airflow is the cause. Until you fix the airflow, you'll keep buying fuses.
What you can do yourself, and what you probably can't
The lint slot is a genuine DIY job. Pull the screen, grab a flexible lint brush, work it down both sides of the slot, and pull out whatever comes up. The first time you do this after a few years, you'll be surprised what the brush brings out. Do it twice a year going forward and it stays manageable.
The blower wheel is a different story. Getting to it usually means removing the front or rear panel depending on the brand, disconnecting a few wires, and knowing what you're looking at once you're in there. If you're comfortable with basic appliance disassembly, it's not complicated. If you're not, don't guess. A clogged blower on a machine that's otherwise fine is a $45 to $85 parts job if the wheel needs replacing, plus labor, and it's worth doing right. One thing worth saying directly
Don't replace a heating element on a slow dryer until you've ruled out airflow restriction. A heating element on a standard electric dryer runs $30 to $55 in parts, and it's a reasonable fix when the element has actually failed. But a clogged blower mimics a bad element symptom-for-symptom: long drying times, clothes damp at the end of the cycle, heat that feels lower than it should. I've seen people spend money on a new element and have the exact same problem a month later because nobody looked at the blower.
The part didn't fix it. The airflow fixed it.
