Last spring I got a call from a guy in Branford who had already ordered a $200 ice maker assembly off Amazon. It was sitting on his counter in the box when I got there. The water inlet valve was clogged. He sent the assembly back unopened.
This is the most common version of the ice-maker-not-making-ice story. The ice maker gets blamed because it's the visible thing, the thing with a name, the thing that stopped doing its job. Why your ice maker is not making ice: quick checklist
These are the seven most common reasons an ice maker stops making ice — roughly in order of how often we see them on service calls across Connecticut.

- Freezer temperature running too warm
- Kinked or frozen water supply line

The water inlet valve: the first place to look
The water inlet valve is a small electrically controlled valve that opens to let water into the ice maker. They wear out, they clog with mineral deposits, and when they fail the ice maker either cycles through its routine and produces nothing, or makes those thin hollow cubes that fall apart when you touch them. Valve replacement runs $40 to $80 in parts depending on the brand — a long way from a full ice maker assembly.
Classic symptom: Ice maker not making ice, but you can hear it cycling — nothing comes out. That's almost always the inlet valve, not the module.
A lot of the time the module is fine and the valve isn't opening fully. This is the first thing we check on a service call, and it's the first thing you should check at home.
The water filter nobody's touched in three years
Before you call anyone, go find your water filter. If you can't remember when you changed it last, change it now. A clogged filter creates enough flow restriction to starve the ice maker, and the result looks exactly like a hardware failure: no drama, no error code, just no ice.
About half the people I talk to don't know where their filter is, or didn't know the fridge had one. Some in-door filter housings hide them pretty well. A few things worth knowing:
- Most manufacturers recommend replacement every six months
- Once a year is realistic for most Connecticut households
- Three years is not fine — and it's one of the most common reasons we find for ice maker not making ice on service calls
Freezer temperature and water pressure
Ice makers have a built-in cutoff. If the freezer runs above roughly 10°F, the ice maker shuts itself off. That's actually it working correctly — protecting itself from making a mess. So if your freezer is running warm because the evaporator fan is struggling or the door gasket has been leaking cold air for the last eight months, the ice maker isn't broken. It's just waiting for conditions that aren't coming.
Check your freezer temp with a cheap thermometer before assuming anything. If it's reading 18 or 20 degrees, a warm freezer — not a broken ice maker — is why you're not getting ice.
Water pressure is worth checking at the same time. Manufacturers typically require at least 20 PSI at the valve. A quick way to test it: dispense water into a measuring cup for ten seconds — you should get at least six ounces. If you come up short, remove the water filter and try again. A clogged filter is often the culprit, but if pressure is still low without it, the issue may be further upstream.
Check the water line behind the fridge
This one takes ten minutes. Pull the fridge out and look at the water line. Kinked lines are more common than they should be, especially after someone slid the fridge back in a hurry. And in older Connecticut homes where kitchen plumbing runs near an exterior wall, that line can freeze in a bad winter. We've seen this in Waterbury and New Haven a handful of times, usually in January. It thaws out, works fine, nobody ever knew.
Samsung, Whirlpool, and LG ice makers: what's different
The checklist above applies to most refrigerator brands, but a few are worth calling out specifically:
- Samsung: The French door models have a well-documented ice maker freezing problem — the ice maker itself freezes over and stops cycling. This is a design issue, not user error, and it requires defrosting the unit and in some cases a duct cover fix.
- Whirlpool / Maytag: The modular ice maker design on many side-by-side models has a common mold thermostat failure point. Worth testing before replacing the full assembly.
- LG: Certain LG models with the craft ice feature have had known issues with the lower ice maker. If your LG is producing no ice at all, check for a software or sensor issue before assuming mechanical failure.

It does happen. The bail arm gets stuck in the off position, the mold thermostat fails, the motor burns out.
