Most people never touch that setting. It ships with heated dry on, they run it that way for six years, and the first time they think about it is when a technician from My Appliance Repair is standing in their kitchen replacing a door gasket. What the heating element is actually doing during heated dry

The heating element itself has a finite number of high-heat cycles before resistance climbs and it starts drawing more current or fails outright. On machines where the same element handles water heating during the wash and then drying afterward, you're running it twice as hard. A replacement heating element on a mid-range KitchenAid or similar runs $45 to $85 for the part, plus about an hour of labor — a repair that shows up earlier than it should on machines where heated dry runs every cycle.
The gasket damage heated dry causes — and nobody mentions at purchase
Door gaskets are rubber. Rubber degrades faster with repeated heat exposure, and the failure pattern looks different from normal wear:
- Normal age compression: gasket flattens and stiffens evenly
- Heat fatigue from heated dry: small lateral cracks, usually along the bottom corners, where the door flexes slightly every time it opens and closes
By the time those cracks are leaking, the customer has usually been running heated dry for five or more years and has no idea the two are connected.
We had a customer in Fairfield call My Appliance Repair about her Whirlpool Gold from around 2018 — a slow seep onto the floor after every cycle. The gasket had exactly that heat-cracked look. The energy cost of running heated dry every cycle
Heated dry adds roughly 15 to 20 cents per cycle in electricity. Run the dishwasher daily and that's around $55 to $70 a year, just for the drying phase. Over five years that's over $300 — spent on accelerating the exact wear described above. The alternative is free: crack the door open two inches at the end of the cycle and walk away for 20 minutes.
A few things to keep in mind:
- Plastic items will still have some water on them — that's physics, not a malfunction
- Rinse aid handles most of the residual moisture
- A bottle of Finish Jet-Dry runs about $4 and lasts a couple of months
- That combination — no heated dry, plus rinse aid, plus cracking the door — is the whole solution for most households
One note on Connecticut summers
In humid months, customers call more often about dishes not drying properly even with heated dry running. Sometimes they respond by selecting a heavier cycle or bumping heated dry to "high." That usually makes things worse. Humidity slows evaporation regardless of setting. Chasing dryness with more heat just adds wear. Open the door, let the steam out, and you're done.
